O Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.4 and indicated that its epicenter was in Jajarkot, which is about 400 kilometers northeast of the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu.

An earthquake has shaken Nepal’s northwestern districts, and authorities said at least 54 people have died and dozens of others have been injured as rescue teams are searching mountain villages.

Authorities said the number of victims was expected to rise, noting that communications with many villages had been cut.

The earthquake killed at least 28 people in the district of Rukum, where several houses collapsed, said police officer Narvaraj Bhattarai in a telephone conversation cited by the Associated Press (AP).

In neighboring Jajarkot district, 26 people were confirmed dead, said Harish Chandra Sharma, a government administration official.

The US Geological Survey initially said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 and occurred at a depth of 17.9 kilometers.

The earthquake occurred shortly before midnight, when many people were already sleeping in their homes and the tremor was also felt in India’s capital, New Delhi.

Earthquakes are common in the mountains of Nepal.

In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed around 9,000 people and damaged around a million structures.
