O The chief executive “feels very well and continues his daily work from the hospital, including consultations and conversations,” the Israeli prime minister’s office said in a message.

Hours earlier, the cabinet had confirmed that the operation had been successful and that Netanyahu was fully conscious.

“He is fully conscious, his condition is good and he has been transferred to continue his recovery,” he said.

The prime minister thanked the medical team at Hadasah Ein Kerem Hospital, where the operation took place, which required general anesthesia.

His office announced on Sunday afternoon that the prime minister would undergo surgery that same night.

Minutes before going to the hospital, Netanyahu gave a press conference, while a massive protest was taking place in front of the Knesset (Israeli parliament), in which more than 100,000 people demanded early elections for his management of the war and an immediate agreement to release the hostages held in Gaza by the Islamist movement Hamas.

In his speech, he made it clear that he does not intend to call elections “because they would paralyze the country in time of war” and insisted that Hamas’ demands for an agreement to release the hostages are excessive.

While on medical leave for an indefinite period, Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Yariv Levin, will carry out his duties.

The 74-year-old Israeli prime minister already had to undergo surgery last July to install a pacemaker, after a heart problem was detected during a medical examination, when he was admitted to hospital after fainting due to dehydration.

As at the time, Netanyahu faces a complicated political situation, now aggravated by the war between Israel and Hamas and the resurgence of tensions on the border with Lebanon.
