UA 59-year-old woman died when a tree fell caused by gusts of wind in the urban area of the Gold Coast (east), said Jaye Newton, from the emergency ambulance service.
“It was like a disaster area, there were trees all over the road,” he added.
The storm downed power lines in Brisbane, Queensland’s regional capital, said local electricity supplier Energex, which found “catastrophic and widespread damage on the scale of a cyclone.”
“More than 800 power lines out of action, 120,000 customers without power, it will take days to restore service,” the company wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Australian meteorological services indicated that another severe storm is expected during the day, with gusts of wind, hail and heavy rain.
