O The Vatican is opposed to the criminalization of homosexuality, clarified this Monday the Argentine Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, theological advisor to Francis, head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

This position was shared during the presentation of a new text dedicated to respect for “human dignity”, which criticizes “surrogacy”, sex change and “gender theory”, defending the rights of LGBTQIA+ people and migrants.

According to Reuters, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez considered the laws that punish homosexuality “a big problem”. “Of course we are not in favor of criminalization”he stated, speaking to journalists.

Fernandez, appointed by Francis as head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith less than a year ago, said it was “painful” to see some Catholics support anti-homosexuality laws.

Called ‘Dignitas infinity’, the text approved by Pope Francis is the result of five years of work and was published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the powerful body of the Holy See responsible for the dogma that lists cases of “concrete and serious violations” of the dignity.

At the same time, the Church emphasizes the right to respect for LGBTQIA+ people (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersexual, asexual and other people of different sexual orientations and gender identities), denouncing “the fact that, in certain places , many people are arrested, tortured and even deprived of the good things in life just because of their sexual orientation.”

The document also censors violence against women, stating that “the phenomenon of feminicide will never be sufficiently condemned”, also mentioning “digital violence” that “puts the good reputation of any person at risk with fake news and slander”.

The need to defend the dignity of migrants is also reaffirmed and human trafficking, the trade in organs and tissues, the sexual exploitation of boys and girls and slave labor, as well as drug and weapons trafficking, terrorism , international organized crime, “ignominious working conditions” or the dismissal of people with disabilities.
