O device, a twin-engine turboprop Embraer EMB-110 ‘Bandeirante’, a plane with capacity for 21 passengers, departed from Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas, bound for Barcelos, around 400 kilometers away, but crashed shortly before landing , when heavy rains fell in that region of the jungle, according to official sources.

The president of Barcelos City Council, Edson Mendes, confirmed that 14 people were traveling on the plane, two of which were crew members, and that there were no survivors of the disaster.

Preliminary information is that some of the passengers were North American tourists, although the mayor stressed that this has not yet been confirmed.

Barcelos is a small city in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, which lives off agriculture and tourism, and has sport fishing as one of its biggest attractions.

According to Edson Mendes, once rescued, the bodies will be transferred to Manaus, which is expected to be possible this Sunday, despite the storms that hit the city.
