“SYour Holiness, Pope Francis is deeply saddened to learn of the violent attack in Sydney and sends his solidarity to all those affected by this senseless tragedy, who are now mourning the loss of a loved one”, read a telegram sent to Reverend Anthony Fisher, Archbishop of Sydney.

The Pontiff “offers his prayers for the dead, the injured, as well as the first responders, and invokes divine blessings of consolation and encouragement upon the nation”, adds the message, signed by the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, in the name of Pope Francis.

At least six people were stabbed to death today in a Sydney shopping center, in an attack in which eight other people were injured and the alleged perpetrator was shot dead by Australian police.

After receiving the alert call, a police inspector went to the scene, where she confronted the attacker, who turned to her with a knife in his hand, whereupon the officer “fired her firearm” at him.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the shopping center after the attack, which caused a huge commotion across the country, while police continued their investigations.
