O Former President of the United States (USA) Donald Trump said, this Thursday, that it was “a very sad day” for the country, after being heard in a federal court in Washington, where he was present to answer about the accusations of attempted change of election results for 2020.

“A very sad day for America“, said the republican, in statements to journalists, before leaving Washington.

After pleading “not guilty” in court, Trump also said that this situation was a “persecution of a political opponent”, referring to the current US president, Joe Biden.

“This should never have happened in the US,” lamented Trump at Ronald Reagan Airport, on the outskirts of the US capital.

The statement, which lasted just a few minutes, reinforced the idea that the republican has been defending that his ‘goings’ to court are a “witch hunt”.

Already today, Trumpo resorted to his social network, Truth Social, to point the finger not only at the Democratic Party, but directly at Biden.

“The Democrats don’t want to run against me, or they wouldn’t be carrying out this instrumentalization of ‘Justice’. But soon, in 2024, it will be our turn”wrote Trump on his social network, Truth Social.

In the shared publication, and quoted by the international media, the former Republican leader also accuses Biden of ordering the Department of Justice to accuse him of “as many crimes as can be invented”, so that he would spend time and money on to defend himself and not in a presidential campaign.

Trump arrived at the courthouse at 3:18 pm (8:18 pm in Lisbon), to be present before Judge Moxila Upadhyaya and testify on the accusations of conspiracy to try to change the 2020 election results, after his defeat by Biden, declaring himself at 4:26 pm (9:26 pm in Lisbon) as “not guilty”.

This Thursday, the judge ended up determining the release of the former US president, who pleaded “not guilty” to the charges of trying to change election results. The next hearing was scheduled for August 28.

Trump was released under conditions, including not having contact about the case with any witnesses unless lawyers are present.

The judge, Moxila Upadhyaya, pledged to conduct a “fair” trial. “I can assure everyone that there will be a fair trial and process,” she stressed during the hearing.

Also in the courtroom was Special Counsel Jack Smith, who led the investigation against Trump.

Several people passed through the court, which is located near the Capitol, and had reinforced security. Trump supporters and protesters made a point of being present, in addition to security and the media. See the images here.

In court, the four accusations that the republican faces were read today: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, involving the process of voting certification in the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and conspiracy to effect such obstruction, and conspiracy to violate civil rights, relating to attempts to reverse in their favor the election results in different states in the 2020 elections.

The 45-page indictment, released on Tuesday, refers to a “Criminal Plan” and accuses Trump of undermining the foundations of American democracy by trying to change the process of counting the votes of more than 150 million voters in the 2020 elections, after his defeat by Biden.

Despite the accumulating lawsuits, Donald Trump remains the big favorite for the Republican nomination and even widened the distance to the ‘number 2’, the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, after the most recent accusation.
