“D“He must be exhausted and close to collapse,” the 75-year-old monarch told Starmer as he welcomed him to the Buckingham Palace audience room in a formal ceremony to invest him as prime minister.
“I slept little,” replied the leader of the center-left party who, after the meeting, officially became prime minister with his official residence and office at 10 Downing Street in London.
The palace released a short video showing the two greeting each other as they sat down to continue the conversation.
Starmer highlighted the “rapid change” of Government after the announcement of the election results, to which the head of state responded that “having to deal with everything immediately must be tiring”.
As tradition dictates, Starmer arrived at the palace accompanied by his wife, Victoria, after the previous Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, left office.
The Conservative Party lost the election, winning just 121 seats in the lower House of Commons, compared with 412 for Labour, which returned to power after 14 years of centre-right rule.
