“AND a very strong candidate. He has a lot of experience as prime minister. He is a close friend and colleague”, said Stoltenberg, quoted by the EFE agency, in Washington, where he met on Monday with the US President, Joe Biden, and today with the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken.
Hungarian ultranationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had already announced today that, following the recent agreement with NATO not to participate in allied activities in Ukraine, he has decided to support Rutte as the next secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO ).
“With today’s announcement by Prime Minister Orbán, I think it is obvious that we are very close to a conclusion (…) I firmly believe that the Alliance will soon decide who my successor will be,” said Stoltenberg, at a press conference alongside Blinken.
The Norwegian’s term ends on October 1st and the 32 NATO member states must choose his successor by consensus. In addition to Rutte, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis also ran for the position.
