“A message is very clear: we have a ‘Russian problem’ before us and it represents a great challenge”said Borrell during his speech at the Munich Security Conference, which took place this weekend.

Borrell added that military efforts “must be important, in cooperation with key partners like the United States”but it is necessary to “consider different scenarios”, not ruling out Washington’s greater involvement in the security of the European continent.

“We must prepare for a long period of tension in relations with Russia, which could be preparing a long confrontation with NATO countries”, added the head of European diplomacy.

In this sense, he explained that European security requires continuing to allocate economic and military aid to Ukraine, more quickly.

“We must define our security obligations towards Ukraine and look to the future because after Ukraine’s accession, Europe will be different,” he said.

The situation in Ukraine, where Russia scored one of its biggest victories since last spring, the day before, “demands that we work together, faster and better” and be “much more agile and more direct”, the high representative added.

“We have to be able to finance, change procedures […] In three months, things will be decided on the battlefield and we cannot wait any longer”, he stressed.
