“OThe numbers are encouraging, but an exit poll is a poll and we haven’t had any results yet,” the deputy leader told public broadcaster BBC.

Rayner praised Labour leader Keir Starmer for “a tremendous job in transforming the Labour Party and putting forward a programme for government that I hope people will support”.

Starmer, who, if the projections are confirmed, will be the next British prime minister, thanked voters for their trust in a post on the social network X made shortly after the projections were released that give his party a historic victory.

“To everyone who campaigned for Labour in this election, to everyone who voted for us and put their trust in Labour to change – thank you,” he wrote.

According to projections for the BBC, Sky and ITV stations, the Labour Party will win the British legislative elections with a large absolute majority, electing 410 of the 650 deputies, while the Conservative Party of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak drops to 131 parliamentarians.

The same projections estimate that the Liberal Democrats will be the third party with the largest parliamentary representation, electing 61 deputies (11 in 2019), surpassing the Scottish National Party (SNP), which drops to 10 (48 in 2019).

The Reform Party (Reform UK), formerly the Brexit Party, led by Nigel Farage, will elect 13 MPs, the Greens two and the Welsh independence party Plaid Cymru four.

The United Kingdom held general elections today to fill 650 seats in the House of Commons, the lower house of the British parliament.

Voting took place between 7:00 and 22:00, but hundreds of thousands of people participated through postal voting.

The bulletins will start to be counted tonight and the results will be announced throughout the night and into the early hours of the morning.

The final result is expected to be confirmed on Friday, when a new prime minister will be appointed by King Charles III and tasked with forming a government.
