“O President [Volodymyr] Zelensky updated us on developments in the conflict, including critical air defense needs (…), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization [NATO] mapped the existing capabilities in different countries and there are systems that can be made available”, said Jens Stoltenberg, at a press conference, at the headquarters of the Atlantic Alliance, in Brussels.

“I expect announcements on anti-aircraft defense capabilities soon”, admitted the representative, at the end of a ministerial meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, a body created almost a year ago to bring Kyiv closer to the Atlantic Alliance, while the country’s accession to the organization has not yet There is a calendar set out.

In recent weeks, the President of Ukraine has reinforced the request for anti-aircraft defense systems because of Moscow’s successive attacks using missiles and ‘drones’ (unmanned aircraft) against Ukrainian civil and military infrastructures.

Germany recently announced that it will send another MIM-104 Patriot to the country invaded by Russia more than two years ago, but NATO’s secretary general said that “there are other” systems available.

Jens Stoltenberg also said he expects the approval of the support package by the United States “without delay”, as the US Congress has given a signal in this regard.

A vote in the Chamber of Representatives (lower house of Congress, with a Republican majority) is announced for Saturday that could dictate the release of an aid package worth 60 billion dollars (more than 56 billion euros).

Kyiv views this aid as critical to combating the Russian invasion.
