“GI would like to invite all of Haley’s supporters to join the biggest movement in our country’s history.”said Donald Trump on his Truth social network.
“There is a place for Nikki Haley supporters in my campaign”said Joe Biden in a statement published after the announcement of the suspension of Trump’s rival’s campaign in the primaries for the Republican nomination, praising the candidate’s “courage” in challenging Trump.
Announcing the end of the campaign, Haley stated that Trump, who is now the only candidate from the right-wing party, must “earn the votes” of those who did not vote for him.
“It’s now up to Donald Trump to win the votes of those who, in our party and beyond, didn’t support him, and I hope he does,” said Haley from Charleston (southeast), a city in the state of South Carolina, where he was governor.
“At its best, politics is about bringing people to your causes, not rejecting them. And our conservative cause urgently needs more people,” Haley argued.
The 52-year-old Republican, former US ambassador to the UN, was defeated on Tuesday in the “Super Tuesday” primaries, in which former President Trump won 14 of the 15 Republican states at stake.
The former president is expected to be nominated as the Republican candidate at the party’s convention next summer.
Biden, who is also virtually certain to be in the running for his party’s presidential nomination in November, also insisted that there is a place for Haley’s supporters on the Democratic side.
Haley was especially popular among moderate and college-educated voters, constituencies that are likely to play a key role in the general election.
The former governor leaves the 2024 presidential race having made history as the first woman to win a Republican primary contest, having defeated Trump in the District of Columbia, on Sunday, and in Vermont, on Tuesday.
