O The 87-year-old Pope is expected to preside at 7:30 pm (6:30 pm, in Lisbon) at the Easter Vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica, in front of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.

“To preserve your health, with a view to tomorrow’s vigil [sábado] and Easter Sunday Mass, Pope Francis will follow the Way of the Cross from Casa Santa Marta, where he resides”read a statement released on Friday by the Holy See.

A Vatican source clarified to France-Presse (AFP) that it was “a simple precautionary measure”, ensuring that the health of the leader of the Catholic Church, who seemed “in good shape” in recent hours, did not raise “any particular concern”.

Last year, Pope Francis did not preside at the Way of the Cross, due to the intense cold in Rome, at a time when he was recovering from bronchitis that forced him to be hospitalized.

On Sunday, Francis is expected at the Easter mass in Saint Peter’s Square, at 10:00 am (9:00 am, in Lisbon), and then at the Easter message and the “Urbi et Orbi” blessing on the central balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica, at 12:00 pm (11 am, in Lisbon).
