A The visit, initially scheduled for May 17th but which had to be canceled due to the Russian offensive, was only officially confirmed in the early evening by Palácio Moncloa for security reasons.

At that time, the visit of the Ukrainian President to Portugal was also planned.

On Saturday, during a visit to the headquarters of the Food Bank Against Hunger, in Lisbon, the President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was asked about a possible visit by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to Portugal on Tuesday.

“I can only confirm one thing for Tuesday: I am receiving the President of the Dominican Republic on a state visit. It has been scheduled for a long time”, replied the head of state, adding: “That is what is on my agenda for Tuesday -Friday, if you know more than me, I would be very grateful for the information.”

According to EFE, the Spanish executive limited himself to informing that Sánchez will receive the Ukrainian President in Moncloa at 12:00 pm (11:00 am in Lisbon), after which both will appear at a press conference.

Shortly after this communication, the King’s House reported that Felipe VI will receive Zelensky at the Royal Palace at 2 pm (1 pm, in Lisbon) and 45 minutes later a lunch is planned in his honor.

Sánchez and Zelensky are expected to sign the bilateral security agreement that they were both going to sign on May 17th and which the President of the Spanish Government referred to in Congress last Wednesday, when he assured that it would be signed when circumstances allowed.

The agreement commits Spain to continue providing military support to Ukraine.

Sánchez has been reiterating Spain’s support for Ukraine in the conflict with Russia, as he confirmed to Zelensky in the telephone conversation they had on May 7, in which he guaranteed that support for as long as necessary.

In that conversation, he said, the progress of the security agreement between Spain and Ukraine, which will be initialed this Monday in Madrid, was discussed.

On the occasion of this conversation, Sánchez announced that he will be present on the 15th and 16th of June in Lucerne (Switzerland) at the Peace Conference on Ukraine, at which more than 50 heads of State and Government have already confirmed their presence, admitting themselves the possibility of the presence of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, who will be in Italy for the Summit of G7 leaders, immediately before.

Zelensky’s visit is the first of a bilateral nature to Spain, although the Ukrainian president was in Granada last October for the European Political Community summit, as part of the Spanish presidency of the EU.

The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022 with Russia’s invasion of the country’s territory.
