OClashes between Palestinian supporters and counter-protesters took place in front of the Adas Torah synagogue, in the predominantly Jewish neighborhood of Pico-Robertson, and the police were called to disperse the gatherings.

“I am appalled by the scenes around the Adas Torah synagogue in Los Angeles,” Biden said on the X Network, adding, “Intimidating Jewish worshipers is dangerous, unscrupulous, anti-Semitic and anti-American.”

In a statement, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the violence “abhorrent” and that blocking access to a place of worship was unacceptable.

Bass indicated that he has asked the Los Angeles Police Department to dedicate additional patrols in Pico-Robertson and outside places of worship throughout the city.

Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky, who represents the area, called the violence an anti-Semitic act and said it was disturbing that it happened “in front of a synagogue in the heart of Los Angeles’ Jewish community.”

“Everyone has the right to protest and everyone also has the right to be protected from fear and violence,” Yaroslavsky said in a statement.

The protests take place against the backdrop of the war in the Gaza Strip, which began with the unprecedented attack that the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas carried out on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, leaving almost 1,200 people dead and taking more than 200 hostages.

This attack triggered the current conflict in Palestinian territory, where a large-scale Israeli offensive has already caused more than 37,000 deaths, most of them civilians, a humanitarian disaster and destabilized the entire region.
