Australian police said Thursday, July 4, 2024, that they believe they have found the remains of a 12-year-old girl who was reportedly attacked by a crocodile while swimming near a remote settlement.

The girl went missing on Tuesday night after swimming in Mango Creek near Palumpa, a small, mostly indigenous settlement about a seven-hour drive southwest of the territory’s capital, Darwin.
“Initial reports indicated that the girl had been attacked by a crocodile.“, Northern Territory Police said in a statement.
After searching the creek, police said they had found remains “believed to be those of a missing 12-year-old girl.”
“This is devastating news “for the family, the community and everyone involved in the search,” said Senior Sergeant Erica Gibson.
How frequent are crocodile attacks in the area?
Crocodile attacks are rare but not unheard of in Australia’s sparsely populated Northern Territory.
In 2013, a 4.5-metre (15-foot) crocodile was shot dead after stalking locals near Palumpa.
