NIn a congratulatory letter dated today, signed by Paul Grod, president of the organization that represents around 20 million Ukrainians in the diaspora in 60 countries, including Portugal, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) recalled António Costa’s actions as Prime Minister of Portugal in support of Ukraine and stated his belief that as head of the European Council he will help Ukraine achieve its goals.

“We believe that your leadership will support Ukraine’s efforts to restore its territorial integrity, secure peace and achieve its historic aspiration – to become a full member of the European Union,” the letter concludes.

The CMU states that the new position is a “remarkable achievement” for António Costa, which recognizes his “leadership and dedication” to “promoting unity and cooperation within the European Union”, also recalling his actions in the first hours of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Portugal’s role in welcoming Ukrainian refugees and his visit to the country at war, “underlining a deep commitment” not only to Ukraine’s sovereignty, but also “to the values ​​of freedom and democracy”.
