A Former US President Donald Trump’s defense urged Judge Arthur Engoron on Thursday to stop the case with immediate effect, arguing that it had irreparably undermined the Republican’s right to a fair trial by “startling departures from normal standards of impartiality.”
They cited his rulings against his client, the prominent role of the chief bailiff, the judicial clerk’s political donations, and the judge’s sharing of articles about the case with former high school classmates.
“My chief bailiff does not make sentences or issue orders, I do,” Engoron wrote, adding, “my sentences are mine and mine alone.”
He also rejected that the sharing of articles through a secondary school newsletter interferes with his impartiality and professionalism in the case, which, he recalled, he has been following for more than three years, and which he intends to conclude.
Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba released a statement that, “as expected, the court today refused to take responsibility for its failure to preside over this case in an impartial and unbiased manner”, but assured that they would remain “steadfast and continue to fight for their clients’ right to a fair trial.”
The lawsuit launched by Attorney General Letitia James alleges that Trump, his company and top executives inflated his fortune by billions of dollars in their financial statements, delivered to banks, insurance companies and other entities to guarantee loans and close deals.
Trump and the other defendants have pleaded not guilty.
Trump, the Republican Party’s favorite for the 2024 presidential nomination, has long complained about the attorney general, the trial judge and her chief bailiff, Allison Greenfield, all from the Democratic Party.
