“The preliminary investigation opened by the police on January 31 (…) was taken over by the Swedish intelligence services”, said the organization in a press release, adding that “the criminal classification was changed to a terrorist crime”.
The Swedish Public Prosecutor’s Office considered it to be “a terrorist crime through serious and illegal threats and attempts to cause public destruction”, according to a statement published on its portal.
Swedish police specialized in disarming explosives destroyed a suspicious object thrown on the premises of the Israeli embassy in Stockholm on Wednesday.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the incident “very serious.”
According to Swedish newspapers Expressen and Aftonbladet, citing unidentified sources, the device in question was a hand grenade, which was thrown over the fence surrounding the diplomatic mission, landing on the ground near the building.
In turn, the Israeli ambassador in Stockholm, Ziv Nevo Kulman, stressed that the diplomatic delegation will not be “intimidated by terror”.
“(…) We were the target of an attempted attack on the Israeli embassy in Stockholm and its staff. We thank the Swedish authorities for their quick response,” said Kulman.
In early December, Kristersson and members of his government participated in a march against anti-Semitism in central Stockholm. The Swedish leader said he was “very concerned about the fact that anti-Semitism is spreading in Sweden and other European countries.”
In the two months after the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, 120 complaints were registered in Sweden for inciting anti-Semitic hatred, according to police data obtained by the AFP news agency.
