A The death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny this Friday, at the age of 47, is generating reactions across the world. The memories of his life of political activism, in the fight against corruption and war, are moving, but, outside of this, there is no criticism of Vladimir Putin and his regime, to whom many attribute blame for Navalny’s death.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, reacted on behalf of Portugal and lamented the death of the Russian opponent, accusing the President of Russia of being “responsible for his death”.
“I pay tribute to Alexei Navalny, who resisted Putin’s regime and fought for democracy in Russia“, began by mentioning the Portuguese minister in a note published on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
“Putin, who exercised his arbitrary power by imprisoning him in increasingly draconian circumstances, is responsible for his death“, he accused, sending “condolences to the family and the Russian people”.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was also one of the first to mourn Navalny’s death, defending the importance of “find the facts”. Stoltenberg recalled the main opponent of the Russian regime as a “a man who fought for democracy and freedom” in Russia “for so many years”.

This was followed by a reaction from the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, who stated that the European Union (EU) considers the Russian regime to be “solely responsible for the tragic death” of Navalny.
“Alexei Navalny fought for the values of freedom and democracy and, for his ideals, made the ultimate sacrifice. The EU holds the Russian regime solely responsible for this tragic death“, wrote Charles Michel, also on the X network.
The President of the European Council offered his “most sincere condolences” to the activist’s family and “to all those who fight for democracy around the world in the darkest conditions”. “Fighters die, but the fight for freedom never ends”, stressed the official.
França was also heard through the voice of Stéphane Séjourné. On social media, the head of French diplomacy stated that the Russian opponent “he paid with his life” resistance to “a system of oppression”. “His death in a penal colony reminds us of the reality of Vladimir Putin’s regime”, wrote, noting that France offers “its condolences” to Navalny’s family, “his loved ones and the Russian people.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed sadness at Navalny’s announced death, regretting that he had paid for his courage with his life. “Anyone committed to democracy must fear for their safety and their lives and that is why we are all very sad,” he said, during a press conference in Berlin, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In turn, Zelensky stated that the President of Russia must “answer for his crimes”. “It’s obvious to me that (Alexei Navalny) was killed like thousands of others who were tortured to death because of one person, Putin, who doesn’t care who dies as long as he maintains his position.”declared the Ukrainian head of state.
The United Kingdom also lamented the “immense tragedy” that Navalny’s death represents for the Russian people. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares expressed himself “deeply shocked” by Navalny’s death and said that the government of that country demands “clarifying the circumstances of his death, which occurred during his unjust imprisonment for political reasons”.
Subsequently, other figures, representing the EU, also ended up speaking out.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said, on the X network, that she was “horrified” and accused Russia of having taken away “the freedom and life” of the Russian opponent, “but not his dignity”. “The world has lost a fighter whose courage will echo through generations.”he added, stressing that “his fight for democracy continues to exist”.

Josep Borrell, head of EU diplomacy, considered that Vladimir Putin bears “sole responsibility” for Navalny’s death. “As we await further information, let us be clear: this is Putin’s sole responsibility,” wrote Josep Borrell, on the same social network, admitting to being “shocked”. Borrell further described Navalny as a “a very courageous man who dedicated his life to saving Russia’s honor, giving hope to democrats and civil society.”
On the other hand, the United States reacted to the announcement of the death with some caution, stating that, if confirmed, “it is a terrible tragedy”. “Given the Russian government’s long and nasty tendency to destroy its opponents, there are obvious questions about what just happened.“, said national security advisor Jake Sullivan, in an interview with public radio NPR. Sullivan added that Washington was trying to confirm the information before “deciding how to proceed”, according to the French agency AFP.
Alexei Navalny died today, aged 47, in a penal colony in the Arctic where he was serving a 19-year prison sentence, according to Russia’s prison services.
“On February 16, 2024, in penitentiary center No. 3, prisoner Navalny AA felt unwell after a walk,” the Federal Prison Service (FSIN) said in a statement cited by the Russian agency TASS.
“The causes of death are being investigated,” added the FSIN.
Navalny’s supporters have not yet confirmed the news and announced that the dissident’s lawyer was traveling to the region where the penal colony is located.
Alexei Anatolievitch Navalny was considered the main opponent of President Vladimir Putin’s regime.
