O Pope Francis said this Wednesday that he was still suffering from a cold and once again limited his intervention at the weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square, in the Vatican.
For this reason, the pontiff let an assistant read the text he had prepared, reports Reuters.
At today’s hearing, he stated that he would delegate the readings: “Because I still have a cold and I can’t read well.”
Still, at the end of the session, he spoke briefly to the faithful, greeting them and asking for peace in Ukraine and the Middle East.
After the audience, Pope Francis arrived in his private vehicle, the well-known ‘popemobile’, supported by a cane, revealing visible mobility problems.
After the hearing, he was sat in a wheelchair to greet people and then tried to climb into the ‘popemobile’. He was unable to do so, even with the help of his team, and had to return to his wheelchair to leave St. Peter’s Square.
The 87-year-old Pope’s health has been a problem in the last two weeks, forcing him to cancel some commitments and avoid reading some speeches due to a slight flu.
Last week, according to Reuters, he made a brief visit to a hospital in Rome to undergo a CT scan and, on Saturday, revealed that he was suffering from bronchitis.
The Pope’s mobility difficulties could complicate his travel plans for this year, which include trips – on unspecified dates – to Belgium, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. In Italy, you should travel to Venice and Verona, on April 28th and May 18th, respectively.
