OThe former president’s lawyers claimed that Trump is unable to pay the bail to appeal the sentence of 456 million dollars (about 415 million euros), after a judge from a state court of appeal in New York ruled last month this value.
Judge Arthur Engoron concluded in February that Trump, his company and top executives – including his sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr. – devised a plan to deceive banks and insurance companies, inflating their wealth based on false financial evidence, to secure loans and do business.
Among other penalties, the judge imposed limitations on the ability of Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, to do business.
Trump appealed the sentence and is asking for the sentence to be suspendedhaving proposed the payment of just 100 million dollars (around 90 million euros) as a deposit.
A real estate agent hired by Trump to help obtain a loan wrote in a statement filed with the court that few companies will admit to issuing an escrow loan of the required amount.
The remaining lending companies will not “accept tangible assets such as real estate as collateral” but will “only accept cash or cash equivalents (such as marketable securities),” broker Gary Giulietti wrote, adding that it is not common to make loans as collateral for this. order of magnitude.
Trump appealed the sentence on February 26, just days after the decision was made official.
At that time, Trump was not required to pay the fine or post bail in order to appeal, and the filing of the appeal did not automatically interrupt the execution of the sentence.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, said she will seek to seize some of Trump’s assets if he is unable to pay the judgment.
Trump claims to have assets worth several billion dollars and testified last year that he had around 400 million dollars (around 350 million euros) in cashin addition to properties and other investments.
In January, a jury ordered Trump to pay 83.3 million dollars (about 75 million euros) to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamation, after she accused him of sexual assault in 2019 in an underwear store in Manhattan, in the 1990s.
Trump recently issued a bond covering that amount while he appeals the sentence.
