“O Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved today [quinta-feira] sending an Israeli delegation led by Mossad director David Barnea tomorrow [sexta-feira] to Qatar,” the statement said.
The head of the Mossad will meet “with the director of the CIA, Wlllliam Burns, the Prime Minister of Qatar, Mohammed ben Abdelrahman Al-Thani, and the head of the Egyptian secret services, Abbas Kamel, with the aim of advancing the release of the hostages” held in Gaza, with the prospect of a truce between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, the text adds.
Last Monday Barnea had already traveled to Qatar as part of these discussions.
The United States, Qatar and Egypt are trying to reach an agreement on a six-week truce in the Gaza Strip that would allow for the release of hostages held in Gaza since the October 7 Hamas attacks, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Around 250 people were kidnapped that day and 130 are still held hostage in Gaza, of which 33 are already dead, according to Israeli authorities.
The most recent conflict in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the Hamas attack that resulted in 1,160 deaths, most of them civilians, according to official Israeli data.
According to the latest report released by the Ministry of Health of the Gaza Strip, supervised by Hamas, around 32,000 people have already been killed in Israeli bombings and incursions in the Palestinian enclave, the majority of them women, children and teenagers.
The Israeli offensive has also destroyed most of Gaza’s infrastructure and close to two million people have been forced to leave their homes, almost all of the enclave’s 2.3 million inhabitants.
The population of the Gaza Strip is also facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis due to the collapse of hospitals, the outbreak of epidemics and shortages of drinking water, food, medicine and electricity.
Since October 7, at least 418 Palestinians have also been killed by the Israeli Army and by attacks by settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories occupied by the Jewish State, in addition to nearly 7,000 arrests and more than 3,000 injuries.
