O parliament received a first threatening ’email’ on Tuesday night, which was not considered credible, but after receiving new threats this morning, the police decided to close the building in the center of Oslo.
“This threat doesn’t say much, but it is worded in such a way that we cannot run the risk of treating it lightly,” Oslo police chief of operations Sven Christian Lie said at a press conference.
“There is nothing dramatic at this stage,” he said, quoted by the French agency AFP.
Lie added that he was not in a position to say whether there was a link between the two threats.
According to Norwegian media, the messages referred to bomb threats, but Lie did not confirm the information.
The police set up a security cordon around the parliament and public access was closed, but work continued normally throughout the morning inside the building.
MPs received messages from the administration, one of which stated that there was no indication that it was dangerous to “be inside the Storting”, the name of the Norwegian parliament.
The next parliament meeting is scheduled for Thursday morning.
According to television images, heavily armed and helmeted police positioned themselves around the building, while dog teams inspected the surrounding area.
Police did not provide further details about the threats, motives or origin.
The Norwegian police are not usually armed, but were authorized to use weapons from March 27th to April 2nd, during the Easter period, without changing the threat level, which is currently moderate.
