UAn earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook the East Coast of the United States, including the cities of New York, Boston and Philadelphia, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
The tremor was reported by several media outlets in the United States, including NBC News, causing several buildings to shake in those cities.
According to the USGS, the earthquake was felt at around 10:23 am (3:23 pm in mainland Portugal).
“My team is assessing the impacts and any damage that may have occurred and we will update the public throughout the day,” New York State Governor Kathy Hochul wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The earthquake had its epicenter near the municipality of Lebanon, in New Jersey, recorded at around 10:20 am local time (3:20 pm in Lisbon). The New York City Fire Department said there were no initial reports of damage.
Meanwhile, reports are multiplying from residents of the region who felt the buildings shaking and, in some areas of the city, office workers took to the streets as a precaution.
The moment of the earthquake was captured by cameras broadcasting a UN Security Council meeting on Gaza, in Manhattan.
The president of the organization Save the Children USA, Janti Soeripto, was speaking before the Council when the shock was felt and the diplomatic corps present in the room tried to understand what was happening. The representative interrupted her intervention for a few seconds.
More than half an hour after the earthquake, New York residents received a warning message from city authorities about the earthquake on their cell phones.
“Residents are advised to stay at home and call the emergency number if they are injured,” the message stated.
Residents in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Connecticut and other areas of the East Coast of the United States, unaccustomed to this type of phenomenon, also reported feeling the shock.
Today’s earthquake brought to mind the earthquake of August 23, 2011, which was felt by tens of millions of people between the North American state of Georgia and Canada.
With a magnitude of 5.8, it was the strongest earthquake to hit the East Coast of the United States since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.
At the time, the earthquake caused material damage to the Washington Monument, led to the evacuation of the White House (North American presidency) and the Capitol (house of Congress) and shook the New York population, three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
