“VWe want to deal him new hard blows – and that will happen soon. In the coming days, we will increase military and political pressure on Hamas, because it is the only way to free our hostages and obtain our victory”, declared the Israeli ruler in a video released on the eve of the Jewish Passover.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas was triggered by the attack on October 7, 2023, which led to the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis, the majority of whom were civilians, and led to the kidnapping of around 240 civilians, of whom of which more than 100 remain hostage in Gaza.
Israel, which has promised to destroy the Palestinian Islamist movement, has been bombing the Gaza Strip, where, according to the local government led by Hamas, almost 34,000 people have been killed, the majority of whom were also civilians.
The Israeli offensive has also destroyed most of Gaza’s infrastructure and close to two million people have been forced to leave their homes, almost all of the enclave’s 2.3 million inhabitants.
The population of the Gaza Strip is also faced with an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, due to the collapse of hospitals, the outbreak of epidemics and shortages of drinking water, food, medicine and electricity.
Israelis have also been protesting in the streets against Netanyahu’s government, either to demand the return of hostages taken by Hamas or to contest the obligation for ultra-Orthodox Jews to enlist in the Israeli army.
