The Israeli army announced today that “around 300,000” Palestinians have abandoned the eastern neighborhoods of Rafah, at the southern tip of the Gaza Strip, since the evacuation order issued on May 6.
“To date, around 300,000 inhabitants have moved to the humanitarian zone of Al-Mawassi”, a few kilometers away, said the Israeli army, in a statement cited by AFP.
Israel is preparing a ground offensive in that overcrowded location, where around 1.4 million inhabitants live, most of them displaced due to the conflict.
On Friday, UN officials indicated that 30,000 people were fleeing the city of Rafah “every day” and that more than 110,000 had sought refuge elsewhere in the narrow Palestinian territory devastated by more than seven months of war.
The Israeli army intends to eliminate the last Hamas battalions in Rafah, having carried out intense air strikes overnight on Friday, especially in the Al-Salam district, close to the Rafah crossing, according to witness reports to AFP .
Today, the army issued a new appeal to Palestinians to leave additional neighborhoods in eastern Rafah and, according to witnesses, residents are preparing to leave.
Further north, witnesses report panic movements in Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya, where the Israeli army also ordered “temporary” evacuations.
The evacuation orders and intense military bombardment in eastern Rafah raised international concern.
United States (US) President Joe Biden has threatened to stop supplying certain weapons to Israel in the event of a large-scale offensive in Rafah.
