O Municipality in the Garden Route district admitted that some of the families affected by the building’s collapse last week came from Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, but there is still no official confirmation.
A total of 59 people have been rescued to date, of which 30 are already dead, with 13 people remaining hospitalized, local South African authorities indicated late this afternoon.
South Africa’s Minister of Public Works, Sihle Zikalala, visited the accident site this afternoon, where search and rescue efforts by more than 200 operators have continued for 172 hours, local authorities reported.
At a press conference there, the South African government official stated that South African authorities are investigating the causes of the accident.
“The forensic investigation approach relating to the collapsed building is crucial to understanding the root causes and factors that led to such catastrophic events,” he highlighted.
Zikalala added that the investigation led by the South African Ministry of Employment and Labor includes “multidisciplinary teams made up of engineers, forensic experts, geotechnical specialists and scientists”.
At least 81 workers were at the construction site when the five-story building collapsed in the coastal city of George last Monday, May 6, according to local South African authorities.
