O Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted this Monday that the shooting in Moscow was caused by “Islamic radicals”.
“We know that the crime was committed at the hands of Islamic radicals, whose ideology has been opposed for centuries by the Islamic world itself”he said, in a speech broadcast on television, cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The attack in question took place on Friday, when several suspects entered a concert hall in Moscow, located in a shopping center.
Kyiv was quick to deny any involvement in the attack, even before the flames that erupted from the attack had been put out.
On Saturday, Vladimir Putin condemned the “barbaric and bloody” terrorist act and called for revenge. Although he did not speculate on the masterminds of the attack, he suggested that the four suspects detained were trying to cross the border into Ukraine, which, according to the Russian leader, tried to create a “window” to help them escape.
In Monday’s speech, Putin highlighted, however, that these detainees tried to escape to Ukrainian territory, asking themselves “why”. “Of course, the question needs to be answered: why did the terrorists try to flee to Ukraine after committing the crime? Who was there waiting for them”he questioned, quoted by AFP.
According to the latest official data, the attack at the Crocus City Hall, 20 kilometers from the center of Moscow, caused at least 137 deaths and 182 injuries, with the four presumed perpetrators of the attack being charged on Sunday with terrorism, a crime punishable by life imprisonment.
Russian security forces detained 11 people allegedly linked to the attack on the Crocus concert hall, located on the outskirts of Moscow.
