O The Hungarian government pressured the United States ambassador in Budapest, following US President Joe Biden’s comments about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who he accused of being “looking for a dictatorship”.

“We asked the ambassador to show us the quote, with location and time. This is a very serious insult,” said Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, quoted by The Guardian newspaper.

Szijjártó argued that Biden’s words are “lies”, which Budapest “does not have to put up with”.

The president of the United States and Democratic candidate for the November elections this year referred, during a rally in Philadelphia, to a meeting that former North American president – and Republican candidate – Donald Trump had with Orbán, in Florida.

“Do you know who you are meeting today in Mar-a-Lago? Orbán, from Hungary, who has already said that he does not believe that democracy works. He is looking for a dictatorship,” said Biden.

A spokesperson for the US embassy in Budapest said: “We can confirm that Ambassador Pressman has been called to an urgent meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding statements made by the President of the United States regarding Hungary. Ambassador Pressman always receives the opportunity to discuss the state of Hungary’s democracy with our ally”.
