O The accident, which occurred near Rancho Grande, a town in the department of Matagalpa, north of the capital Managua, caused “19 deaths” and around 40 injuries, according to the state news portal El 19 Digital.

According to the portal, which cited data from the Ministry of Health, the ten children who died were between 4 and 16 years old.

Authorities said the vehicle was exceeding the speed limit and that police detained the driver after he attempted to flee.

“We are moved, we fully share (…) the pain of these families and we call for greater rigor in the application of laws for these means of transport”, said the vice-president of Nicaragua, Rosario Murilo.

The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which was carrying around 70 people, and then “overturned” on a bridge, President Daniel Ortega’s wife also told the official television channel Canal 4.

According to images shared by the media, the bus, which was heading from the city of Waslala to Matagalpa, for a spiritual retreat, collided with a bridge and was stuck on a metal ramp on the highway.
