Chard is very popular in cooking, as it is consumed on pizzas, in the form of fried dumplings and in stews. How about trying it in a tasty pie? Try it!

Ingredients

  • 500 grams of frozen puff pastry
  • 1 bunch of green chard
  • 5 tablespoons of butter
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • 5 small onions cut into thin strips.
  • 5 peeled and seedless tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 crushed garlic cloves
  • Grated cheese (see mom’s tips)
  • 1 branch of thyme

Preparation Mode

  1. Roll out the puff pastry to a thickness of approximately 4 mm.
  2. Line a 25 cm diameter wet round pan with it.
  3. Let the dough rest in the pan for a few minutes before putting it in the oven.
  4. Chop the chard leaves into thin strips, wash and drain.
  5. In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of butter and sauté the chard over low heat, until the water has evaporated and the vegetable is soft.
  6. Season with pepper, salt and nutmeg. Reserve.
  7. In a separate pan, heat two tablespoons of butter and sauté the onion, without letting it color too much.
  8. Over low heat, add the tomato, season with pepper, salt, crushed garlic and thyme.

Assembly

  1. Preheat the oven to 250ºC.
  2. Place a portion of sautéed onion and tomato on top of the dough.
  3. Cover with grated cheese.
  4. Spread the chard.
  5. Cover with cheese again.
  6. Distribute the rest of the sautéed onion and tomato over the top.
  7. Sprinkle more cheese on top.
  8. Spread the rest of the butter into small pieces.
  9. Bake for ½ hour, or until golden.

Mom Tips

Use a mixture of Parmesan cheese and grated cheese or just grated Gruyère cheese.

The cheese Gruyère is yellow and made from cow’s milk. It is hard, slightly salty and spicy.

There is also the option of using white cheese or culinary cream cheese in the recipe.

In good supermarkets you can find puff pastry.

If you prefer, use a homemade puff pastry recipe.
