O Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly said in a conversation with Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that Ankara could help end the war between Ukraine and Russia. However, the Kremlin did not take kindly to this idea.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Erdogan could not play the role of an intermediary in the conflict.
“No, it is not possible,” Peskov said after being questioned by journalists, according to Russian news agency Tass cited by Reuters, without giving further explanation.
According to the Turkish presidency, Erdogan met with Putin and discussed the possibility of a fair peace that would be beneficial to both parties, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which took place in Kazakhstan.
At this meeting, the two leaders will also have spoken about the conflicts taking place in the Gaza Strip and Syria.
It should be recalled that the Turkish head of state, who has maintained relations with both Kyiv and Moscow since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, has offered on several occasions to mediate a negotiated exit from the conflict between the two countries, which border Turkey on the Black Sea.
Unlike other NATO leaders who have imposed sanctions on Putin’s government, Erdogan has tried to maintain good relations with Russia and Ukraine throughout the conflict.
For example, Turkey played a key role in creating an agreement – which was in force for a year – to ensure that grain could be transported safely from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.
The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has already claimed tens of thousands of lives on both sides, and recent months have been marked by large-scale Russian air strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, while Kyiv’s forces have targeted targets on Russian territory near the border and on the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed in 2014.
