A Civil Defense of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, confirmed the deaths of 31 people due to the floods that hit the region in recent days.

In addition to the deaths already confirmed, authorities revealed that 74 people were missing and 56 injured.

According to information given at 9am this Friday, local time – 1pm in mainland Portugal – more than 350,000 people were affected in 235 municipalities in the Brazilian state, 17,087 of whom were displaced.

There are many requests for help on social media. So much so that a group of citizens decided to create SOS Enchentes, a movement that aims to enhance support for flood victims and increase the visibility of help points.

Through this movement, which has now created a page at the Vakinha Institute, people affected by the catastrophe can appeal for fundraising and anyone who wants to help can do so through the same platform.

Thousands of people have already asked for help to rebuild their homes and, ultimately, their lives.

One of the affected families is that of a journalist from Notícias ao Minuto Brasil. As the ‘Vakinha’ tells, the floods hit Santa Rosa, on Thursday, May 2nd, destroying “all the furniture in the house” of the parents, who were left without “a bed, sofa, appliances”.

The journalist created this fundraiser without the parents knowing, “as they are too proud to ask for help”. However, all the help will go a long way towards rebuilding the lives of “these two workers” who were victims of the floods that hit the State of Rio Grande do Sul.
