A information was provided to the Lusa agency today by several European sources, who indicated that António Guterres will participate in person at the beginning of the work, on March 21st, at a lunch with the heads of Government and State of the 27 EU Member States in the first of two days of the regular European Council.

“He was invited, in fact, because this is the right time to have a joint discussion on the Middle East and Ukraine”, a European diplomat told Lusa.

Another European source indicated that the invitation was made by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

According to these European officials interviewed by Lusa, the European Council in March (which takes place on the 21st and 22nd of March) will focus on the area of foreign affairs, mainly on the war in Ukraine, marking two years since the invasion Russian, at the end of this February.

However, a more complex discussion will be focused on the Middle East region, due to the intensification of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and given the different positions between the 27 EU leaders.

The idea is, nevertheless, to “reach new conclusions” about the Middle East, according to a European official, who admitted, however, that it is a “tough nut to crack”.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the discussion at this European summit will focus on EU sanctions on Russia, frozen Russian assets, financial and military support for Kiev and the country’s eventual accession to the community bloc, said the same source.

For April, another European Council is scheduled for the 17th and 18th of that month, this time in an informal format, which will be held in Brussels by the Belgian semi-annual presidency of the EU Council and which will be dedicated to issues on the internal market and competitiveness.
