O Guterres spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said there is “increasingly dangerous rhetoric in the region, and the rhetoric is also dangerous.”

The secretary-general called for maximum restraint from all parties.

“The world and the region cannot afford another open conflict”, stressed Guterres’ representative.

This Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amir Abdolahian is expected in New York to participate as an observer in the historic session of the Security Council that will vote on the Palestinian request for full membership of the UN.

The possibility of Abdolahian meeting with the secretary general is not excluded, who will have a busy agenda with meetings with the heads of diplomacy from several Arab countries who will also participate in the session.

After the Iranian attack on Israel on the night of Saturday and Sunday, Abdolahian held talks with around 20 foreign ministers and international organizations to contain possible retaliation by Israel, which insists it has the right to respond.

Iranian leaders also raised the tone of their warnings against Israel and Western countries in the face of a possible response from Tel Aviv, which Tehran says was aimed only at military targets.

Iran launched an unprecedented attack against Israeli territory on the night of April 13 to 14, which it justified as a measure of self-defense, arguing that the military action was a response to “the Zionist regime’s aggression” against Iranian diplomatic facilities in Damascus (Syria), which occurred on April 1 and was marked by the death of seven members of the Revolutionary Guard and six Syrian citizens.

The Western international community strongly condemned Iran’s attack on Israel, calling for maximum restraint in order to avoid an escalation of violence in the Middle East, a region already highly unstable due to the war that has been ongoing for more than six months between Israel and the Islamist group.
