Mike Pence, remember, presented his candidacy for the White House in early June, thus challenging his former boss Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican primaries.
With this decision, Mike Pence is the first major Republican candidate to withdraw from the race, just a few months before the start of the presidential primaries in the United States, and with Donald Trump as the main candidate.
The primaries begin in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina early next year.
Mike Pence, 64 years old, resigns at a time when he has just over a million dollars in his campaign account and has reported more than 620 thousand dollars (around 600 thousand euros) in debts. Initially he had raised only 3.3 million dollars (about three million euros) for the electoral race.
The former vice president is also dealing with the fact that he was unable to qualify for the third debate between Republican candidates in the primaries, which is scheduled for November 8 in Miami.
Pence was a close ally of Trump during his four years in office, but their collaboration deteriorated following allegations of electoral fraud by the then president, which were rejected by all judicial instances.
