SAccording to Ihor Lutsenko, military, founder of the Aerial Reconnaissance Support Center and leader of the Order of Santiago drone company, the volunteer unit will focus on the operation and maintenance of drone systems.

“Unfortunately, the enemy has a big advantage in manpower, so we should not neglect any ideas that would allow us to reduce this gap,” said Lutsenko, quoted by the Ukrainian press, referring to the difficulties of Kiev’s forces in countering the superiority military on land combat fronts in the east of the country.

Both Ukraine and Russia have used ‘drones’ for reconnaissance, surveillance and targeted attacks since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022 and Kiev last February created a separate branch of the military dedicated to unmanned drones.

Just today, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, announced that the Government will allocate more than 360 million additional euros for the acquisition of ‘drones’.

Shmyhal said that the funds allocated today will make it possible to reinforce the Security and Defense Forces with 300 thousand devices.

The voluntary recruitment process for the new unit is aimed at women over 18, who will have to go through “a rigorous selection process”.

According to figures reported by the Euromaidan portal, since 2022 the number of women in the Ukrainian Defense Forces has increased by 40% and currently around 60 thousand are serving.

Before the Russian invasion, women were mainly confined to non-combat roles, but the situation has changed, as has the age limit for enlistment, which has been raised to 60, equal to that of men.

Ukraine this year approved new and controversial rules for military recruitment, but so far the Kiev leadership has refused the mandatory mobilization of women.

In recent weeks, Russia has intensified bombings against several Ukrainian cities and the country’s infrastructure, particularly energy infrastructure.

At the same time, on the ground fronts, Russian forces have made slow advances in the east of the country in the face of Ukrainian troops who complain of a lack of men and ammunition, while Kiev asks its allies to increase military aid.
