O Latvian Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis, speaking to a radio station, said that this is an “inevitable” measure, due to the security risk that would result from the concentration of travelers in Vientuli.

This point in eastern Latvia would become, together with Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, the only point through which Ukrainians residing in the European Union can access Russian territory, according to a decision by Moscow leaders released on Wednesday.

According to Latvian media, this measure by the Russians is a response to the decision of several states to ban the entry of vehicles registered in the Russian Federation.

“It was an obviously deliberate decision by the Russian Federation to create not only a general risk, but also possibly a humanitarian crisis,” Kozlovskis said, regarding the restriction on travel involving Ukrainians.

This measure could lead to the accumulation of hundreds of people at the small border post of Vientuli, which the minister attributed to “creating problems” for Latvia.

After the closure of Vientuli and Pededze, the border posts with the Russian Federation in Terehova and Grebneva remain open.
