“AThe European elections are important because we live in an essential historical moment and because we have never had so many enemies inside and outside Europe”said Macron in a debate held on democracy on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the German Basic Law and the 35th anniversary of the reunification of Germany.

The French president reiterated what he said at the end of April at the Sorbonne University in Paris, that “Europe could die” to talk about the danger posed by the “fascination with authoritarianism” and “nationalism”.

“We are experiencing a form of crisis of democracy”, stated the French head of state, considering that it is the “ambiguous moment” we are experiencing that fuels nationalism and extremes”.

Macron praised European solidarity considering that if nationalists were in leadership in Europe there would be no European vaccines, a European plan to relaunch the economy, the ability to respond to the immigration challenge or a green deal. He further considered that the EU would have abandoned Ukraine and supported Russia.

In the same vein, Steinmeier said that Europe needs “an alliance of democrats” in the current political context.

Macron and Steinmeier made these statements in a debate that was part of their visit to the ‘democracy festival’. This is also the first state visit made by a French president to Germany in 24 years.
