O The earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers in the Moluccas Sea, at 6:48 pm local time (10:48 am, Lisbon time), off the island of Halmahera, in the province of North Moluccas.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, French agency AFP reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center declared there was no risk of a tsunami.

The Indonesian Geophysical Agency (BMKG, its acronym in Indonesian) warned the population of possible aftershocks.

Indonesia frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activity as it is located on the so-called Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, where tectonic plates collide.

In November 2022, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Java, killing 602 people.

Most died due to collapsed buildings or landslides caused by the tremor.

In January 2021, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Celebes, killing more than 100 people and leaving thousands homeless.
