O President of Argentina, Javier Milei, provoked, this Sunday, an “unprecedented” diplomatic crisis between Buenos Aires and Madrid by claiming that the wife of the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, is “corrupt”, during a speech at a convention of the far right in the Spanish capital.

The Spanish government has already reacted and demanded that the president withdraw the “very serious” accusations and publicly apologize to Pedro Sánchez and his wife, Begoña Gómez.

“They don’t know what kind of society socialism can produce, what kind of people and what kind of abuses it can generate”began by mentioning the liberal Milei, at the Europa Viva24 convention, in the Vistalegre pavilion in Madrid, cited by the Spanish press.

“Even if you have a corrupt wife, take five days to think”he added, in reference to the investigation into Begoña Gómez, initiated following a complaint for alleged influence peddling.

After the investigation was released on a Wednesday, Pedro Sánchez decided to cancel his agenda to “think” and sent clarifications to the following Monday.

In a press conference, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, condemned the “very serious” accusations, considering that they were “something unprecedented in the history of international relations”.

“Javier Milei was received in good faith in the Spanish capital to participate in an extreme right-wing political event and was treated with utmost respect. Public resources from the Spanish State were made available to him and he responded with a frontal attack on our democracy“, said the minister, at a press conference at the Moncloa Palace.

“Mr. Milei’s insults break with all diplomatic customs and the most basic rules of coexistence between countries”he added.

The minister demanded an apology and left a warning: “If these apologies do not occur, we will take all measures we deem appropriate to defend our sovereignty and our dignity”.

Albares also announced that he had decided to withdraw the Spanish ambassador to Argentina, María Jesús Alonso, but first revealed that he had contacted the parliamentary leaders of the parties represented in the Spanish parliament and the high representative of the European Union for External Relations, Josep Borrell,

Borrell has already condemned Milei’s “attacks”, in a post on the social network X.

“Attacks against family members of political leaders have no place in our culture: we condemn and reject them, especially when they come from partners”wrote Borrell.

It should be noted that Chega’s leader, André Ventura, is one of the guests at the convention. Also at the event are the Spanish Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox, the French Marine Le Pen (National Union), the former Prime Minister of Poland Mateuwsz Morawiecki (Law and Justice, PiS) and, via videoconference, the Prime Ministers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni (Brothers of Italy), and from Hungary, Viktor Orbán (Fidesz).
