“A Most of the fighting and the most massive attacks are taking place in the Donetsk region. In fact, that is where Russian attacks are concentrated,” Zelensky said in his daily message posted on social media.
Russia has claimed annexation of the region in 2022, despite not having full control.
The head of state said that he had a meeting in Kiev with the main commanders of the Ukrainian army, after returning to the country following visits he made in recent days to several European capitals, as well as Singapore and the Philippines.
Russian forces made their biggest territorial gains in the last 18 months in a major land attack on the Kharkiv region, which began on May 10, seizing several border villages and forcing thousands of people to abandon their homes.
Ukraine has sent reinforcements and equipment to the area, further increasing its defenses at a time when it is experiencing shortages of manpower and ammunition.
Mayor of Kharkiv – Ukraine’s second most populous city – Igor Terekhov said Russia launched 76 airstrikes against the city in May, almost three times more than in April.
For some analysts, the Russian offensive in this region may hide an attempt to enter other points on the front line.
