A Poland is investigating the sighting of three unidentified objects in its airspace, suspected to be weather balloons, near the country’s border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

According to the Associated Press (AP), the objects were identified in the Mazury region, on the country’s eastern border, and had inscriptions in Cyrillic, the alphabet used in the Russian language. RMF FM radio, cited by AP, says that the alleged balloons did not have special devices attached.

Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the objects appeared to be weather balloons, adding that the matter was being treated as a “civilian” and not a military issue. Next week, the Polish National Security and Defense Committee will meet and on the table will be, among other issues, this incident.

A spokesperson for the regional police said that several incidents with weather balloons had been recorded in the region.

Poland, remember, is a member of NATO and has been a strong ally of Ukraine in its fight against the large-scale Russian invasion that began in February 2022.
