A wife of Australian Julian Assange, founder of the WikiLeaks portal, said this Thursday that the legal case against her husband could “be moving in the right direction” after the president of the United States, Joe Biden, said that the country is “analyzing” a request to close the case.

“It looks like things may be moving in the right direction”Stella Assange told the BBC, adding that the accusation was “a legacy of Trump and that Joe Biden should have withdrawn it from day one.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also reacted to Biden’s comments and stated that “Mr. Assange has already paid a significant price and it is enough”.

It should be noted that Julian Assange was accused of 17 espionage crimes by the USA, under the Espionage Act of 1917, and could face up to 175 years in prison.

The 52-year-old journalist has been imprisoned since April 11, 2019 in a high security prison in the United Kingdom, after being detained by English police at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he took refuge for seven years. Now, the British court will reconsider Julian Assange’s authorization to appeal his extradition to the USA on May 20, 2024.

On Wednesday, Joe Biden declared that the US “is analyzing” the Australian government’s request to dismiss the legal case against Assange for the disclosure of confidential documents.
