UOne of those plans involved killing the head of a German arms company, Armin Papperger, the chief executive of Rheinmetall, a Western government official said.

Recruiting common criminals in foreign countries to carry out the attacks is one of the procedures foreseen in these plans, according to the same official, who is not authorized to comment on the case.

The source did not provide details about other plans, first reported by CNN, which the US told Germany and the security services managed to protect Papperger and thwart Russian intentions.

White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson declined to comment on the alleged plot to kill Papperger, but said: “Russia’s escalating campaign of subversion is something we take very seriously and have been focusing on intensely in recent months.”

“We know that the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin wants above all to undermine our support for Ukraine in its defense against the Russian war of aggression, but the German government will not be intimidated,” said German Interior Ministry spokesman Maximilian Kall.

German security measures have been significantly increased since 2022 and “the threats range from espionage and sabotage to cyberattacks and even state terrorism,” Kall stressed.

European officials meeting for a NATO summit in Washington this week said they were dealing with a surge in “hybrid” attacks, which they blamed on Russia and its allies.
