O The exact number of people trapped underground is not known, Mayor Bekir Aksun added in statements to the private Turkish television channel.

The collapse occurred at around 2:30 pm local time (11:30 am in Lisbon) in an open-pit mine near the Bagistas reservoir, around 90 kilometers from the city of Erzincan, in eastern Turkey.

“There are buried mine workers”the provincial governor, Hamza Aydogdu, told NTV, but without specifying how many, while the president of the Erzincan Chamber, Bekir Aksun, stated that “at least nine workers” were trapped.

A video broadcast by the aforementioned network shows a huge mass of earth that broke away from a hill and then quickly moved in a liquid state through a narrow valley.

The company that operates the mine, Anagold, released a statement confirming the incident, specifying that the landslide occurred in a space where gold minerals are subject to leaching, that is, they are accumulated in the open air and subjected to a cyanide bath to separate the stone gold.

The company, 80% owned by the multinational SSR Mining, guarantees that it is doing everything possible for a rapid rescue intervention, but without specifying a possible number of victims or environmental consequences.

The mine has been in operation since 2010, and, according to SSR Mining, has reserves of 3.2 million ounces of gold.
