O The Spanish Congress of Deputies approved, this Thursday, with 178 votes in favor, the amnesty law.

The amnesty law for Catalan independentists was voted by the plenary of Spanish deputies and approved by an absolute majority made up of left-wing, nationalist and separatist parties.

The amnesty was a demand from the independence parties Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC, currently in the regional government) and Together for Catalonia (JxCat, from former autonomous president Carles Puigdemont) to make the last government of socialist Pedro Sánchez viable, last November.

The law was approved with a total of 178 votes out of a possible 350. The law will now pass to the Senate to continue its processing.

Law covers 12 years of Catalan separatism

The amnesty will cover those involved in the separatist movement in the Spanish region of Catalonia between November 1, 2011 and November 13, 2023.

This period covers, for example, an illegal popular consultation and referendum in 2014 and 2017, as well as the 2017 unilateral declaration of independence.

The street riots that followed the sentence that condemned Catalan leaders in 2019 are also covered.

The PSOE estimates that 309 people linked to the independence movement will be amnestied, as well as 73 police officers who face legal proceedings due to their involvement in demonstrations and on the day of the illegal referendum in 2017.

The group of 309 potentially amnestiable people include politicians but also – and these are the majority – public servants, firefighters or school directors who are facing justice for, in particular, polling stations in the illegal referendum being installed in educational institutions. .
