“NIt is not clear why the Americans came to Afghanistan, but whatever the purpose for which they come, they have to obey the law of Afghanistan”, said the spokesman for the Taliban government, Zabiullah Mujahid, in a video broadcast by TOLO News channel and cited by the Efe agency.
The spokesperson stated that talks are ongoing about this case, but did not reveal the names of the prisoners.
According to Zabiullah Mujahid, the Americans were detained for “violating Afghan law.”
In addition to Americans, an unknown number of foreigners are detained in the country due to violating the rules of the Islamist regime, the spokesperson assured.
“Anyone traveling to Afghanistan must obey the country’s laws and if they break the law they will face legal action,” he added.
Although there are no official details about the identity or alleged infractions of the detainees, family members and the media have denounced for more than a year the arrest of American Ryan Corbett in August 2022, and have been calling for his release ever since.
Corbett lived in Afghanistan for more than a decade, together with his wife and children, running his own consultancy company, and also being subcontracted by several non-governmental organizations (NGOs), until the withdrawal of international troops in the fall of Kabul to the Taliban, in August 2021.
The US citizen returned to Afghanistan on his own in January 2022, to renew his business visa and pay his workers, according to his family.
The United States, like most states and international organizations, does not recognize the Taliban government, nor does it have diplomatic representation in the country since the withdrawal of its troops.
